The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an allied health professional whose primary focus is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. EMT’s function as part of a comprehensive EMS response team performing critical on-scene intervention with the basic equipment typically found in an ambulance. The Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course at Mineral Area College is an intense, semester-long course earning 12 credit hours. In addition to the regularly scheduled class sessions, there will be several Saturday courses that are required. Students should plan 8-10 hours of self-study time, every week, in addition to class time. All EMT students will be required to complete hospital clinical experience as well as field experience on an ambulance. These requirements are in addition to all classroom sessions and are scheduled outside of class time. Students will be required to purchase a uniform and specific EMT equipment.
Upon successful course completion, the EMT student will receive a certificate from Mineral Area College. The student will be eligible for the National Registry of EMT’s (NREMT) testing (written and practical). Upon successful completion of NREMT testing, the student will be nationally registered as an Emergency Medical Technician. At that time, the student will be eligible for a state license as an Emergency Medical Technician.
